A Pioneering Spirit
An inherently creative woman, with a keen eye for aesthetics and a passion for creating healthy skin care products, Betsy Gates had a dream of crafting her own line of natural luxury soaps and body products. Though married and struggling to raise four kids, she enrolled for a soap making class at the local community center and as providence would have it, she was a natural.
The art of developing and perfecting scents and skin products intrigued her and she applied her knowledge and skills to experiment and come up with fusions that were innovative and had a quintessentially artisanal signature. When she started out, she used to sell her soaps from the back of her car or her friend's store whenever she found time during her already hectic day. In a while, word started to get around and she was soon being invited to several Farmers Markets where her creations were featured alongside the work of other notable local businesses and artists. Simply Betsy Company still sells regularly at the North Union Farmers Market and others in the Cleveland or Northeast Ohio area.
From a humble beginning
Over time, our customers kept coming back for her bespoke creations, which, in 2016 led us to set up our first brick and mortar retail store. But it wasn't smooth sailing from there. Betsy and her husband had to learn how to run a business the hard way and adapt quickly. They faced several hardships during this time, shifting to several locations and at more than one point even living in their store.
While many would have been tempted to throw in the towel at this point, Betsy was not one to quit on her dreams. It took all of her determination, but through it all Betsy persevered with the support of her family. This determination eventually paid off as Betsy's reputation, and that of her products, continued to grow.
Soon, people from all over the city came to the Simply Betsy Company to purchase our healthy and organic skin and body products. In 2013 we hit an important milestone with the opening of our newest store in the 5th Arcade mall. This opening was a turning point for us and while our 5th Street location is no longer running, we're thrilled to say that we've been moving rapidly from strength to strength ever since.
Growth and innovation
Right from the start we have strived to innovate and stay ahead of the curve. We have created a variety of soaps for every skin type. For instance, the Simply Betsy Bar, one of our signature creations is made with locally grown beets. Hippie Love has the essence of white sage, calendula and patchouli. Our special pine-tar bar for people with eczema uses pine-tar sourced from Ohio's Amish country. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and just as you would nourish your body by eating healthy foods, you should nourish your skin by using organic and healthy products.
Today, innovation still lies at the heart of the Simply Betsy Company philosophy and Betsy herself continues working just as hard as she did back in those heady early days. Her drive and dedication has allowed us to continue creating exotic and unique new products that will always smell fantastic and be gentle on the skin while also being ethically and sustainably sourced
We've come a long way in just a few years, but we're not through yet! Which is why we're proud to say that this year we relocated to our newest and biggest facility yet at 17325 Euclid Ave.
A small business making big strides in the community
Since its inception, our company has helped the local economy grow. Our aim is to give back some of the love and support shown by the people of this great city by providing more jobs to the community. When we first set out with this dream in 2010, we never imagined just how popular our products would become or how wholeheartedly the community would support our efforts to make healthy, natural, sustainable (and great smelling) bathing and beauty products available to everyone.
It's been an extraordinary journey so far, and we hope you'll continue to join us and be a part of the Simply Betsy community in the years ahead; because if we're right, the very best is still yet to come!
